Mike Penders will finally arrive with the RC Strasbourg team on Monday, as the Belgian goalkeeper’s season-long loan move from Chelsea has been completed. The 19-year-old will travel to the team’s pre-season camp in Austria, where he aims to establish himself as the first-choice goalkeeper under new coach Liam Rosenior.

Chelsea signed Penders last summer on a transfer from Genk for approximately €20 million as a long-term option among their ranks of goalkeepers. Standing at 2.00 meters tall and already capped for the youth team of Belgium, Penders is rated among the brightest prospects at his position. His transfer to Strasbourg is also part of the club ownership realignment with Chelsea under BlueCo, which has utilized the Ligue 1 team to develop top prospects.

Strasbourg recently completed the signing of permanent center-back Mathis Amougou and will next sign midfielder Kendry Paez on loan. Signing Penders marks the beginning of a new influx of Chelsea loanees aimed at gaining top European experience. Sources close to the deal confirmed:

“All the formal steps have been completed for Mike Penders to join RC Strasbourg on loan from Chelsea.”

The Chelsea Goalkeeper Could Start in the First Team at Strasbourg

The Blues intentionally waited to make the move after their participation in the Club World Cup ended, keeping Penders in the squad to receive first-team practice and preparation for games. That strategy now translates to game-practice training in France, where he will likely fight for the No. 1 role.

The loan also creates space on Chelsea’s first team and loan list, which may soon lead to further youth exits. For Penders, the coming weeks in Austria could determine whether he starts the season as Strasbourg’s No. 1 goalkeeper. The view is that Rosenior trusts Penders, as other reports claimed:

“Penders is the priority… tipped to take [the No 1] place.”

If everything goes his way, Chelsea might come back next summer with an even more refined shot-stopper, and perhaps a Ligue 1 sensation.
