Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has tried to calm Chelsea fans’ fears about Josh Acheampong’s future as rumors grow that the 19-year-old will leave Stamford Bridge. Reports say that the Blues want to sign a new center-back this January, but Romano says that this won’t change Acheampong’s place at the club.
Acheampong signed a new contract that lasts until 2029 in December. This season, though, he hasn’t been able to get consistent playing time in the Premier League, even though he’s done well when he has been on the pitch. The versatile defender has been a benchwarmer for the last nine Premier League games, which has raised questions about his development under former manager Enzo Maresca, who was recently fired and replaced by Liam Rosenior.
In a recent video update, Romano talked directly about worries about Acheampong’s situation. He said:
“Adding a new centre back in January does not mean anything for Josh Acheampong. Chelsea still trust him. Despite all the rumours we will have about Josh Acheampong, his situation remains absolutely, absolutely quiet.”
European Giants Circle As Acheampong Waits For Chances
Acheampong has played in 11 games this season, but he hasn’t been in any Premier League squads lately, which is strange because he has played very well when selected. Under Maresca, things got more complicated for the teenager. Maresca even said in public that he wished he had started Acheampong in some games.
The young player came from Chelsea’s famous Cobham academy and was moved up to the first team last season. He can play multiple positions on the defensive line, making him a good choice for teams looking for young, adaptable defenders.
Manchester City and Bayern Munich are said to be keeping an eye on the defender. Both clubs are known for being able to develop young players. Fiorentina, a team in Serie A, are also interested in the young player and have made him a top priority to help their weak defence.
But Chelsea have been warned that selling the England Under-21 international would come back to haunt them because fans and experts alike see him as a future regular on the first team.Β Chelsea probably won’t be busy signing players during the January transfer window. Instead, they will focus on getting players to leave. Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi are still not in the squad and are the most important players to leave this month.
