Chelsea are waiting for a €40 million overall package for Renato Veiga after the Portuguese centre-back gave his approval to move to Atlético Madrid. The 21-year-old will leave Stamford Bridge, with Atlético being the closest club currently pursuing him, along with Bayern Munich and other Premier League clubs rumored to be interested.
Negotiations between the Blues and Atléti are moving rapidly. The Spanish giants have held direct talks with Veiga’s agents, and personal terms have been settled. Chelsea, however, are holding firm that their valuation is complete in its entirety, including a floor value and tiered add-ons totaling €40 million. According to various reports, Atléti also initially approached Cristian Romero but shifted their focus to Veiga after Tottenham made the Argentine center-back unapproachable.
Chelsea’s stance is unchanged. With Veiga signed for €14 million from Basel in 2024, they are positioned to make a massive profit on any transfer. After completing the transfer, the London club will turn their attention to Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, another young star they have been targeting closely.
Renato Veiga Impressed at Juventus After Leaving Chelsea on Loan
Veiga had the second half of last season on loan at Juventus, where he started 13 Serie A games, provided one assist, and played for 1,094 minutes. In all competitions combined for the 2024–25 season, the left-footed defender made 33 appearances, including European games, and scored twice.
His international profile also became much stronger, as he started five UEFA Nations League matches for Portugal. Standing at 6’3″, Veiga is a dynamic and level-headed player who can play as a centre-back, left-back, or defensive midfielder. He’s also renowned for his athleticism, good positioning, and ball progression, attributes that would make him an ideal signing for Diego Simeone’s revamp of Atlético’s defense.
With personnel discussed and interest mounting, Veiga’s exit now hinges on Chelsea and Atlético finalizing the deal’s framework. Once confirmed, it’s poised to set the wheels in motion elsewhere in the Blues’ summer business, including the next step in their defensive remake.
