As things stand, Frank Lampard is the favourite to succeed Maurizio Sarri as Chelsea manager. Blues fans are generally mixed towards the possible appointment of the club legend. This article will analyze why some feel that Super Frank is ready for the Blues hot-seat and why some feel that appointing him at this point in time could prove to be disastrous.
Why do some feel that Lampard will be a good manager?
Lampard spent 13 years of his professional football career at Stamford Bridge between 2001-2014 and is undoubtedly one of the greatest players to have worn the jersey of the club. He will be well acquainted with the structures and culture of the club and this could just be a recipe for success. He will also bring positive vibes to the club as he is a well-liked person and his football intelligence could be of huge benefit to the Blues.
Even though Lampard lacks the same experience and accolades as a manager as compared to others such as Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho who are currently available, his vision and charisma could make up for that. Zinedine Zidane’s first stint as Real Madrid manager started in 2016 when he lacked prior experience and he managed to lead the club to three successive Champions League titles as well as one La Liga title.
Why do some feel that Lampard will not be a good fit?
The 41-year-old lacks the necessary experience having only started his managerial career with Derby County last summer. He did manage to guide the Rams to the Championship promotion playoffs but failed to navigate them to Premier League promotion. He has yet to taste any success as a manager as yet and it is still too early to gauge whether he is as good a manager as he was a player.
Chelsea also will undergo a unique period this summer as they will not be able to make any new signings for the next two transfer windows due to their transfer ban. One could argue that the current period requires a manager with plenty of experience at the highest level for the club to successfully navigate through.
