Gianfranco Zola has hailed Callum Wilson ahead of the Blues’ League Cup quarterfinal against Bournemouth this Wednesday.
Despite Maurizio Sarri having expressed his satisfaction at the club’s striking options in recent times, many expect the west London club to dive into the January transfer window and look for another forward to bolster their frontline. Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud have adequately taken on the bulk of responsibilities in a central attacking role for the Blues yet their lack of cutting edge on goal, with the two combining for a total of just six Premier League goals this season, deemed insufficient enough for Sarri’s side to mount a sustained title challenge.
In contrast, Wilson has already netted eight league goals for The Cherries and also scored during his maiden appearance for England last month. With the Bournemouth forward enjoying a breakthrough season, the Premier League elite have had their heads turned, including Chelsea, and when asked about this rumour in a news conference on Tuesday, Zola neither confirmed nor denied such claims.
“I’m sure that there are a lot of players, they are linked with us,” the Chelsea No2 said. “Certainly Callum Wilson is doing very well for this club and he’s an interest not only for us but for many.”
The west Londoners are currently preparing for the League Cup clash with Bournemouth and as such, Wilson featured heavily in their research against their opposition.
“He’s strong, fast and he sees the goal,” added Zola. “I like [him] because he’s quick but also strong in the air, which is also a very important quality.
“Having said that, I don’t want to go too much into it. He’s doing very well and I’m pleased for him. He has a lot of qualities that can take him a long way. I really hope that he keeps improving like this.”
