Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink believes that the club must sign a striker in January if they want to challenge for the Premier League title this season.
Despite their strong start to the season, many pundits and fans believe that the Blues are short of quality in their forward department. And while Hasselbaink believes that Chelsea do need another striker, he does not believe that Sarri’s team is necessarily short of quality up front.
The 46-year-old suggested he believes that Alvaro Morata will score goals going forward, but that the club will need at least three recognised strikers in their squad if they want to challenge for the national honours – currently there are only two, in Giroud and Morata. Michy Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham are recognised strikers that are affiliated to Chelsea, but both are currently out on loan with Valencia and Aston Villa respectively.
While talking on Sky Sports, Hasselbaink said: “Well do they need another striker? I think every club that is going for the Premier League needs three strikers. So in that aspect yes.
“But for me, Morata will score goals. He is somebody that is a confidence person. He is so good at getting behind a defence – he needs to keep on doing that. Everybody’s talking ‘he needs to do this, he needs to do that’. He shouldn’t concentrate on becoming something he is not. He should embrace what he has got.
“He is not somebody like Giroud, who likes the contact of the centre-halves. He shouldn’t have to play like that. If he keeps on playing to his strengths, he will score a lot of goals, I believe.”
