Former Venezuelan footballer turned pundit Alejandro Moreno believes that AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma will not end up moving to Chelsea at the end of the season.
The 19-year-old is regarded as one of the best young players in world football and has been the first-choice keeper for Milan since he was just 16 years old.
He is also expected to be the new number one for the Italian national team after long-term first choice Gianluigi Buffon announced his retirement from international football after the Azzurri failed to secure qualification for the 2018 World Cup following their playoff defeat against Sweden.
Chelsea may need a new keeper at the end of the season as their current first choice Thibaut Courtois has been linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
A move to Los Blancos could be appealing to the Belgian as his children reside in the Spanish capital. Furthermore, Chelsea are currently in fifth place in the Premier League standings and outside the Champions League qualification positions.
Moreno: ‘If you’re going to stay in a mess, stay in a familiar mess’
If Courtois does leave, then the Blues will need to sign a new world-class keeper and Donnarumma is one of the names they have been linked with. Moreno, however, does not believe that a deal will take place as both Milan and Chelsea are not in good state of affairs.
“I think if you’re going to leave Milan, you’re going to go to the upper tier of the upper tier of the upper tier. The way that Chelsea have performed and the issues they seem to have internally and you don’t know what’s going to happen with Antonio Conte and what the transition is going to be.
“So you don’t even know who the next manager would be if Antonio Conte got fired. So, if you’re Donnarumma, if you’re going to stay in a mess, stay in a mess that you’re familiar with.”
