Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilcueta has expressed his concern that Chelsea have been late to the table in doing business this transfer window – but is still confident his side can strengthen before deadline day.
Chelsea have been very unconvincing in their defence of their Premier League title this season – not to mention their EFL Cup exit this week – and many pundits and fans feel that manager Antonio Conte could be set to leave the club this summer.
Conte has been open about his feelings that his club lack depth this term and they are reportedly currently in talks to sign the duo of Emerson Palmieri and Edin Dzeko. The next week could hence be pivotal to the club’s fortunes for the rest of the season.
Following the defeat against the Gunners, Azpilcueta said: “I am sure we are working on it the same as every team. We have signed Ross [Barkley] and I am sure we are trying to get the players who can improve the team. But we still have a few days to go – all those other teams have just done their business already.”
On the signing of Dzeko
When asked if he thought his club could sign Dzeko, Azpilcueta said: “Every club in the world in every transfer window tries to find the best solution for the team and I am sure we are working on it.
“Today, we are disappointed and it hurts a lot. We missed the chance to win a trophy. We need to analyse and improve and on Sunday we can do better. We have another chance in the FA Cup to keep going and try to get that trophy. After any defeat, the next game you need to bounce back and show the answer from the team.”
