There was furious backlash directed at Chelsea’s co-owner, Behdad Eghbali, and the sporting directors after the team drew 2-2 with Ipswich Town. After the final whistle at Stamford Bridge today (April 13), club executives made their way to the dressing room. Their presence, however, did not sit well with the fans.
The result of the match was a damaging blow to Chelsea’s top-five ambitions. The Blues were on top in terms of possession but were on the end of some fine counter-attacking football as Julio Enciso and Ben Johnson put the visitors ahead 2-0 in the first half.
Axel Tuanzebe’s own goal in the second half and a late curling effort from Jadon Sancho saved a draw, but it certainly wasn’t enough for the fans. Though manager Enzo Maresca has copped some flak, much of the ire has been aimed further up.
Many supporters believe that the club’s recruitment policy and decisions made from the top have rendered the squad unbalanced and vulnerable. They made it clear with comments reacting to the video of Chelsea’s hierarchy:
Why is there no booing against these three clowns?

They are incompetent. They were the worst in two transfer periods. The striker and goalkeeper issue absolutely needed to be resolved. And yet they did nothing. It's over. It's trash 😡😡

Enzo Maresca questions Chelsea players’ performance in Ipswich draw
Chelsea’s hopes of qualification for next season’s Champions League slipped away as Enzo Maresca’s side fought back to earn a point at Stamford Bridge. The Blues recovered with a strong second half, but the Italian head coach was unhappy with the way his team handled key moments in the game.
Ipswich took the lead early, thanks to Chelsea’s poor defensive edge. Maresca wasn’t hiding his unease about the perforamnce, as both goals were preventable. He said to the press:
As I said at the beginning, it’s tough. Even in the first 20 minutes, at this stage of the season, against these kinds of teams, if you are able to score the first one, the game completely changes on your side.
Unfortunately, we missed chances, and then we conceded. I think the team was not good enough in different things. This is where we need to take one step forward and react in the right way.
The draw leaves Chelsea outside the top five as the Premier League season approaches its conclusion. Not reaching the Champions League could be disastrous for Enzo Maresca’s future at the Bridge. But they can hope to turn things around in their remaining six games.
