Chelsea have set their sights on Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, whose potential move to Stamford Bridge could hamper Jadon Sancho’s future. The 20-year-old has had an exciting fourth season in the Dortmund first team. He has scored eight goals and provided three assists in 29 Bundesliga games so far.
It is worth noting that Gittens spent some time in the Chelsea youth system before joining Reading, then moving to Manchester City. He left England in 2020 for Germany, before breaking through Borussia Dortmund’s first team in 2022. The winger has already spent time at Cobham, and it won’t be far-fetched to see him return.
The German giants have reportedly valued Jamie Gittens at about £50 million. This is a fee that the Blues are capable of paying. He has already garnered interest from clubs in the Premier League, but the Stamford Bridge hierarchy is prepared to lead the race for his services. According to reports, the Blues are making plans to double his current £2.5 million yearly wages.
This situation has certainly cast some doubts regarding Jadon Sancho, whose position at Stamford Bridge will be affected by Gittens’ purchase. Chelsea have an obligation to buy Sancho from Manchester United after his loan spell is over. However, they can back out of it with a £5 million fee.
With Gittens looking like a potential option for the Blues, it seems as though Sancho may return to Old Trafford this summer. The Manchester United winger has enjoyed a fairly brilliant time at Stamford Bridge, racking up three goals and 10 assists in 36 games.
Chelsea’s Search for a Young Winger Continues
It is little surprise that Chelsea have continued a consistent search for a young winger. The Blues have insisted upon a youth-driven recruitment strategy under the Boehly-Clearlake consortium.
Aside from Jamie Gittens, they have placed Real Betis’ rising star Jesus Rodriguez on their radar. The 19-year-old has impressed in Spain, making 17 La Liga appearances in his debut season.
He will also be a fairly affordable target, as he is reportedly valued at around £35 million. Due to his age, his wages are not expected to be as high as Sancho’s, making him an easier strain to bear for the Blues’ books.
