Chelsea centre-back Wesley Fofana will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season after a hamstring operation. The French centre-back had only made his return to action in March after a previous three-month layoff due to an early hamstring injury. He is now expected to be out of contention until next season.
The 24-year-old featured in the two games before the March international break. After a couple of fleeting appearances against Leicester City and Arsenal, he was sidelined once more and missed the recent 1-0 victory against Tottenham. Chelsea revealed in a statement:
The club can confirm that defender Wesley Fofana has today undergone successful hamstring surgery. Wesley was assessed by specialists this week after the 24-year-old suffered an injury of the muscle. Following that assessment, it was concluded that an operation would be required.
The 24-year-old will now begin his recovery and undergo rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff at Cobham over the coming weeks. Everyone at the club is fully focused on supporting Wesley in his recovery.
Fofana has faced a number of injury issues since his move from Leicester City to Chelsea in 2022. In his first season at the Bridge, he made just 20 appearances. The 2023-24 season saw him miss out entirely with a damaged anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
This season has not been better, as he has played just 14 games under Enzo Maresca. Fofana’s injury is a blow to Chelsea, who currently sit fourth in the Premier League and are eyeing a strong finish. He will also miss the FIFA Club World Cup, but is expected to return before the 2025-26 season.
Chelsea Have Four Players Out Injured
Injuries continue to plague Enzo Maresca’s plans as Chelsea are without four players. Wesley Fofana is out for the season after having surgery on a hamstring problem, and so is Omari Kellyman. The 19-year-old, who joined from Aston Villa last summer, has not played and is now aiming for the 2025-26 season.
Midfielder Romeo Lavia is also unavailable following another muscle setback. The Belgian, who has played scarcely this season, is not back, and his timeline is uncertain.
Marc Guiu is facing a lengthy lay-off, also with a hamstring injury. There is no time frame for when he will return. These absences leave Chelsea low on options ahead of the season’s final games. However, the Blues will be glad to have players like Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer back from injury.
