Emerging reports have claimed that Chelsea plan to sign Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho on a permanent transfer after his loan spell expires. This comes after The Athletic revealed that the Blues have to pay the Red Devils £5 million if they opt out of signing the 25-year-old.
Sancho arrived at Stamford Bridge on an initial one-season loan, which included a £25 million obligation-to-buy clause, should Chelsea finish above 15th in the Premier League. That condition is about to be triggered, with the club currently in fourth. The agreement also contained an exit clause allowing the Blues to withdraw from the transfer by paying United a £5 million fee.
The 25-year-old started brightly at the Bridge with three assists after his first three Premier League games. Since then, he has struggled badly for form, providing just one league assist in 2025. However, the Blues are still expected to push for a permanent deal for Sancho. For the next transfer window, they will need a new winger because Mykhailo Mudryk is currently unavailable after testing positive for a banned substance. With Jadon Sancho set to cost £25 million, he is arguably an affordable option for Chelsea.
Sancho’s spell in England has not been successful. At Borussia Dortmund, he was one of Europe’s most promising young talents, hitting the back of the net 53 times and registering 64 assists in his 158 games. However, that form has yet to translate to the Premier League.
He has been unable to validate the €85 million price tag that followed his move in 2021, with just 12 goals and six assists in 83 games for the Red Devils. His Chelsea loan was the opportunity of a fresh start, but his struggles have continued. For £25 million, the Blues could find themselves on to a winner if Sancho regains his levels from Borussia Dortmund. But should his inconsistency persist, the Blues will have another costly player on their wage bill.
