Chelsea travelled to Kazakhstan to face FC Astana in the Europa Conference League in December 2024. Despite the Blues needing a win to secure passage to the round of 16, coach Maresca brought in wholesale changes to the matchday squad.
Thankfully for Chelsea, the game was all but over as a contest after 39 minutes, with a quick-fire brace from Marc Guiu and a third from Renato Veiga putting them 3-0 up. Marin Tomasov pulled one back from the hosts but it wasn’t enough to swing momentum back in the underdogs’ direction.
