Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has revealed that his club are aiming to reach the deep stages of the Champions League this season. The Blues have been impressive so far this season both in the Premier League as well as in Europe’s Premier Club competition.
“These are the kind of performances that we need, coming away to such a great stadium and taking all three points,” said Abraham as quoted by the official Chelsea website.
“We had to stay patient because Ajax kept the ball well and created a lot of chances. It’s never easy to play them so we just had to stay together and that’s what we did.
“We can go as far as possible. We’ve got a fantastic team, our togetherness is unreal and we just have to keep that fighting spirit now.”
As things stand, Frank Lampard’s side are in pole position in Group H of the Champions League. They however only lead second place Ajax Amsterdam only on goal difference and have three difficult games against Ajax, Lille and Valencia still to play.
Most recently the Blues secured a 1-0 win against last seasons Champions League semi-finalists Ajax Amsterdam. Impressively, they managed to secure the victory away from home.
Rather surprisingly, the winner came from Michy Batshuayi. Blues fans will be hoping that the goal can help the Belgian to score many more goals this season especially as he was viewed as surplus to requirements at the club by many fans ahead of this season.
Chelsea are not expected to win the Champions League this season
Chelsea have not won the Champions League since their famous triumph over Bayern Munich back in 2012. There is little doubt that they usually enter a Champions League aiming to go all the way and win the competition. This season is however a little different as they are not expected to win the competition due to their very inexperienced side.
With that being said, the games that they get to play in Europe’s premier club competition this season will be very important. It will allow the club to participate against the very best in Europe, grow as a squad and importantly, players such as Abraham, Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic will be able to gain invaluable experience and exposure against the best teams which will help the West London club going forward.
