Willy Caballero will almost certainly be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season. Kepa Arrizabalaga looks set to remain as Blues first-choice keeper for the foreseeable future but Frank Lampard’s side will likely have to look into bringing in a new shot-stopper to provide cover for their goalkeeping position. The following are some players whom they can consider.
1. Jack Butland
Butland is currently on the books of Stoke City. He is currently out of the England side due to the presence of Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope and Dean Henderson, all of whom play in the Premier League. Should the Potters fail to win promotion to the Premier League this season, Butland will need to move away from the club and ideally move to a top-flight side.
The 26-year-old is a quality keeper. He will provide good cover for Kepa and will also be able to challenge the Spaniard for the first-choice goalkeeping position.
2. Fernando Muslera
The 33-year-old has plenty of experience at the highest level and has been first-choice goalkeeper for Uruguay for the best part of the last decade. Muslera is an experienced goalkeeper who will provide more than adequate cover for Kepa. However, he is not used to sitting on the bench and may not be open to moving to the Bridge if he is not assured of first-team football.
3. David Stockdale
The journeyman keeper is also highly experienced and will almost certainly be able to be acquired if the Blues put in the correct amount of effort. A move to Chelsea would be a big step up for Stockdale who has spent the bulk of his career playing for clubs outside the elite division.
Stockdale famously played a crucial role in helping Brighton and Hove Albion to win promotion during the 2016/17 Championship season before opting not to remain with the Seagulls the following season. He then moved to Championships side Birmingham City.
