Chelsea could be set to hand a new deal to academy graduate Fikayo Tomori, according to reports in the British media.
Tomori could be set to receive opportunities for the Blues first-team this season following the departure of David Luiz who joined Arsenal on transfer deadline day. The youngster would have in all probability been sent on another loan spell this season had Luiz not left Stamford Bridge.
Tomori is ready for the Premier League
The 21-year-old is familiar with Blues manager Frank Lampard after having spent last season on loan with Derby County. He was a first-team regular for the Rams as he went on to make 55 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and was subsequently given the club’s Player of the Year award. The Championship is not an easy league to play in and many would argue that it is physically more demanding than the Premier League. The fact that Tomori could shine in the second tier proves that he is now worthy of getting first-team opportunities for the Blues.
The Canadian-born Englishman is a solid defender who is also good in terms of picking out passes. As things stand, he is the West Londoner’s third choice defender until Antonio Rudiger returns to full fitness.
Tomori’s current deal with the Blues has 24 more months remaining and the club must make an effort to increase it as he is very clearly a star in the making. The player offers versatility which is always a valuable asset to have. While mainly a centre-back, he is also capable of operating as a right-back if needed.
Chelsea have done well this summer to manage to tie down the young duo of Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to new deals. It would make sense for them to now do the same for Tomori and Callum Hudson-Odoi.
