Chelsea recently released a statement indicating the five players who were released upon the expiration of their contracts. Goalkeeper Eduardo and youngster Kyle Scott were not well known to the Premier League audience and their departures will be largely overshadowed by the three experienced campaigners who were released by the team.
The following are three notable players released by the Blues.
1. Gary Cahill
After making just two Premier League appearances last season, it was evident that Cahill had no future at Stamford Bridge. A parting of ways was the best thing for both club and player. Cahill served the West Londoners with distinction during his several years at the club, helping it to win two Premier League titles, two FA Cups, one League Cup, one Champions League and two Europa Leagues.
He was the successor to John Terry as club captain which indicates that he has been an important leader within the team. At 33, Cahill can still play at the highest level and he has been linked with moves to boyhood club Aston Villa as well as Arsenal.
2. Rob Green
Green joined the Blues last summer as cover for Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero in goal. He did not play a single competitive game for the club. He however has been a household game in the Premier League for the better part of the past 20-years and was regarded as one of the best English keepers during his time with West Ham.
Green was a former first-choice keeper for England at the 2010 World Cup.
3. Gonzalo Higuain
Higuain is definitely the most surprising name on the list. The Argentine arrived at Stamford Bridge in January and was expected to add firepower to the club up front after Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata failed to find the back of the net on a regular basis. Higuain was rather underwhelming during his six months in West London as he went on to score just five goals from 14 Premier League games.
