Chelsea are on the verge of securing the long-term future of youngster Ruben Loftus-Cheek according to a report published by The Sun. The report added that the Englishman has agreed to sign a new five year deal with the club.
The new contract will see the player earn £150, 000 which is a significant increase from the £60, 000 he had been previously earning.
Loftus-Cheek currently out of action due to a long-term injury
The 23-year-old is not expected to be in action this year due to an Achilles tendon rupture which he sustained during the Holocaust Memorial game in May. He is expected to return during the second half of the season and could be a key player for Frank Lampard’s side during the long-term.
Loftus-Cheek was largely impressive when called upon by Maurizio Sarri last season and his new contract is a well-deserved reward for his efforts. He finished last term with 40 appearances in all competitions, contributing 10 goals and 5 assists.
He actually managed to secure more assists than the likes of Ross Barkley, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho. Chelsea’s decision to hand Loftus-Cheek proves that the way that it treats youth products may be improving. The Blues have previously come under harsh criticism for its poor treatment of young players. The likes of Romelu Lukaku, Mohamed Salah and Kevin de Bruyne all left Stamford Bridge early on during their careers after being deemed surplus to requirements by the West London club.
Loftus-Cheek is one of the most highly-rated young English players. As Chelsea is his boyhood club, he will likely put full effort into ensuring positive results for the team in the long-run. He can also develop into a world-class talent under the right guidance as he showed when playing for England during the 2018 World Cup. Rewarding the player with a new contract was a good decision by Chelsea.
