Chelsea defender David Luiz has said that his side could have beaten Liverpool last Sunday if they took their chances. The West London giants were outdone during the second half of the game after Reds stars Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah managed to find the back of the net in quick succession.
Statistics from the game do suggest that Jurgen Klopp’s side were better on the day and deserved the three points. Chelsea ended the game with just three shots on target and 38% of ball possession. Liverpool, by contrast, had five shots on target and 62% ball possession.
The win for Klopp’s side was their first against the Blues at Anfield in several Premier League games. It would also have been a sweet moment for fans. During the 2013-14 season, Liverpool suffered a 2-0 defeat in the same fixture. The game was the infamous one in which Steven Gerrard infamously slipped and it was the result that ultimately lost the Merseyside giants the League during that campaign.
The Blues did not cause much trouble to Liverpool’s defenders. Eden Hazard did however not convert good chances from Emerson Palmieri’s ball delivered towards him and Willian’s delivery which went into the hands of Reds keeper Allison.
The result will be a huge blow to Chelsea’s chances of finishing this season in the top four.
“At the end, they got their opportunities and they scored, and we didn’t,” Luiz told chelseafc.com.
“It’s a bit frustrating when you do a great game at Anfield and you don’t get the three points. They have a great team, a great philosophy, a great coach, they are in the run to fight for the title, they are excited about that, but I think we had our chances.
“When you play in big games against big clubs you don’t get many opportunities to score, so when you have you have to try to score. Eden made great choices, one unlucky with the post, the other one the wind was not his friend, but okay, he was trying like always.
“We didn’t get the points here but we are still in the fight.”
