Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is adamant that his side have what it takes to clinch a top-four finish this season. The race for the top four this season is one of the most intense in recent history with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Arsenal and the Blues all chasing a Champions League qualification spot for next season.
“The last period of the Premier League will be very hard for every team,” said Sarri to the Blues official website.
“I think we can reach the top four even if we are not able to win eight matches in a row. We need to think match by match. The best way is to be focused on the next match.”
The Blues have blown hot and cold this season. They started the season in promising form under Sarri and for a while, it looked like they could even challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for the title. However, they have since lost momentum, consistency and it will not be surprising if they fail to secure a top-four finish for a second consecutive season.
The final games of the season could make or break the season for many teams in the top-flight, including Chelsea. A solid run of form could see them finish within the top four while a continuation of the inconsistency which has marred them since the turn of the year will see them finish outside the Champions League qualification spots. A finish outside the top four could end up resulting in the sacking of Sarri. The Italian has been under pressure recently amidst accusations that he has lost the trust and respect of some of the players within his side.
Sarri will be aware that we are now entering the period which will ultimately determine whether he ends up keeping his job beyond this season.
