Legendary Chelsea striker Didier Drogba believes that disgraced former Blues manager Jose Mourinho deserves another chance to rebuild his managerial career. The self-described “special one” is widely considered to be one of the best managers of the past generation, having won two Portuguese Primeira Liga titles, three Champions League titles, two Serie A titles, one Copa del Rey and La Liga title among others.
However, the 56-year-old has drawn strong criticism recently and his last two managerial stints with Chelsea and Manchester United ended on bitter terms with both clubs being in a state of turmoil after he left. Most recently, he was sacked as manager of United in December after the club looked like a shadow of the side that they were last season as they finished second in the League. Though United have since rejuvenated under the guidance of interim boss Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, they would have most likely finished the season well outside the top four had Mourinho still been in charge.
Some feel that Mourinho’s best days as a manager are behind him and that his tactics are now out-dated. Others including Drogba, however, feel that he still has a lot to offer the game and can revive his career in the right environment.
“I think Jose is a great manager,” Drogba – speaking courtesy of Yokohama Tyres – said as quoted by Goal.
“I think he deserves the chance to manage again and I think he will. He is passionate about his job.
“You know, it’s unfortunate what happened with Man United, but he still has the quality to manage a team.
“We know he did it many times and people forget that the year before, he won the Europa League with this team and suddenly everyone says he is done.”
Mourinho is likely to definitely be in management sooner rather than later. He will also be very determined to prove his doubters wrong. But does he still have what it takes to win major trophies on a regular basis like during the old days? Only time will tell.
