Liverpool legend turned football pundit Jamie Carragher believes that Chelsea need to stand by manager Maurizio Sarri following their 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City on Sunday. The result was humiliating for the Blues and proves that they cannot compete with the top teams in the league this season.
Chelsea are known to be a very tough club when it comes to dealing with managers and if the 59-year-old tactician does not improve things soon, he will likely be sacked in a similar way to what has happened to most of the club’s managers that have come before him.
The performance against City was also Chelsea’s second humiliating defeat within the space of two weeks after having experienced a 4-0 mauling at the hands of Bournemouth late in January. The result also saw the West London giants drop down into sixth place on the League standings behind Manchester United and Arsenal.
There is now heavy pressure on Sarri to turn things around. There were heavy expectations on the Italian when he was appointed as manager of the club last summer, succeeding Antonio Conte. The Blues started off the season strongly and were even considered title contenders earlier in the season. However, a series on inconsistent performances now mean that finishing in the top four is going to be a tough challenge.
Many fans and pundits are critical of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich as well as the management of the club for being too impatient with managers and not giving them sufficient time to adjust to life at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool icon Carragher believes that Sarri should be given more time. As quoted by the Daily Mail, he said: “He should be there until the end of the season,”
“The only reason we’re talking about Chelsea and what they’ve done. We’re not talking about [Unai] Emery, it’s Chelsea and Sarri.
“We see teams throw the dice at the bottom and change managers. It seems Chelsea may be thinking that now. Maybe Sarri has picked the wrong club?”
