Gary Cahill is set to leave Chelsea at the end of the season. The veteran’s current contract at Stamford Bridge is due to come to an end next summer. He has so far only made one Premier League appearance this season and so it is quite evident that he is surplus to requirements at the club.
The former England international has been a great servant to the Blues cause since joining the club from Bolton Wanderers in 2012. He has gone on to make 289 appearances in all competitions for the team, scoring 25 goals and has won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup, one Champions League and one Europa League. During his prime, he was regarded as one of the best defenders in England.
It is now time for the Blues to move on and offload Cahill. It is quite evident that they need to make drastic changes next summer if they want to re-establish themselves as genuine title contenders. One man whom they should consider signing as a potential replacement for the 33-year-old is Newcastle skipper Jamaal Lascelles.
Lascelles who is a youth product of Nottingham Forest joined the Magpies in 2014. He has been a hit at St James Park since and has led the club well since Rafa Benitez appointed him as club captain during the summer of 2016. Lascelles has a dominating presence at the back and his leadership skills are among the best in the Premier League. He also is a very physical player and his height makes him dangerous from set-pieces.
The 25-year-old has displayed good performances for the unstable Newcastle over the past five years. He will definitely be able to perform much better in an environment where he is given more support. This is a player whom the Blues must surely move for as they aim to rebuild.
