Kia Joorabchian, the agent of David Luiz, has revealed that the Brazilian central defender is currently in the negotiating table with Chelsea over a new contract.
Luiz has already made 26 appearances in all competitions this season, including 21 Premier League games, which is already more than double the amount he had played last term.
Having featured sparsely during Antonio Conte’s last season in charge, Luiz has starred for the Blues this campaign under Maurizio Sarri, the centreback featuring at the heart of the club’s defence with performances which have made him a favourite at Stamford Bridge. The Brazil international hopes that his superb displays in the Chelsea backfour would convince club suits to extend his stay at west Londoner, with his current contract expiring at the end of the campaign.
While the 31-year-old’s ball-playing abilities constitute a vital part of Sarri’s preferred playing style, the club’s policy of handing no more than one-year extensions to players over 30 may yet prove to be a stumbling block. Moreover, reports have emanated that talks have stalled due to Luiz’s agent Joorabchian reportedly laying out his financial terms to Marina Granovskaia, the club’s director.
However, Luiz’s agent Joorabchian has shut down such rumours, claiming he and the west London side are working together to ensure the Brazilian’s second stint at Stamford Bridge extends for another season.
“Contrary to some reports we are in a very amicable situation with Chelsea,” said Luiz’s representative. “We are trying to work out a deal for David Luiz because he wants to stay, the manager wants him to stay and so does the club. I’m sure something will be worked out.”
The Brazilian played a key role in Chelsea’s 2016-2017 Premier League title by making 33 appearances and after falling behind the pecking order last term, he has gone back to reestablish himself in the Blues XI under Sarri.
