Former Manchester United star Memphis Depay has revealed that he would not turn down the opportunity to return to the Premier League with either Manchester City or Chelsea.

After impressing for the Netherlands during the 2014 World Cup, the Dutchman established himself as one of the top young talents in World football. He ended up earning a move to Manchester United, then managed by fellow Dutchman Louis Van Gaal during the summer of 2015.

During his stint at Old Trafford, Depay made 33 appearances, scoring two goals. He did show flashes of quality but was largely inconsistent. He eventually fell down the pecking order at the club and was sold to Ligue 1 outfit Lyon in January 2017 for a fee which could reach £21.7 million as reported by Sky Sports.

United did insert a buy-back clause in the deal, realizing the fact that Depay could still blossom into a superstar. Since arriving in France, he has flourished and has scored 29 goals in Ligue 1 from 69 appearances for Lyon so far.

Lyon are fallen giants of French football. While they are still one of the top sides in the country, they no longer challenge for major silverware. This fact must surely make a move away from the club something which is appealing to Depay, especially as he is capable of playing for a club that challenges for major trophies.

Whilst discussing clubs that he would like to play for, Depay mentioned Manchester City and Chelsea but did not mention his former club United.

“I want a new transfer to a top-level club this summer. Lyon is a big club but it’s not one of the five best in Europe,” he told Dutch source Helden.

“I want to go to a club like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich. I want to go to a city that suits me and a club that suits me, to a team that really wants to play football.

“I always talk about Real Madrid, a royal club. White and gold shirts.”
