Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole believes Gonzalo Higuain is the perfect signing for the club, calling the Argentinian striker a proven goalscorer.
After a protracted search for an additional striker by the Blues, Higuain finally arrived at Stamford Bridge on a temporary deal that expires at the end of the current campaign, with his switch to west London paving the way for Alvaro Morata to join Atletico Madrid on loan.
The 31-year-old is tasked with banging in goals for Maurizio Sarri’s side who are struggling in front of goal at the moment. Higuain will need to acclimatise to the rigours of the Premier League swiftly, and while his debut performance already sees questions regarding his suitability to England’s topflight, former Blues midfielder Cole thinks the Argentinian is the right man for the job.
A Logical Signing
Cole reckons Higuain fits the bill as the focal point of attack for the west Londoners while also adding that his arrival will now allow Eden Hazard to return to the left wing role, the favoured position of the Belgian, after featuring as a false nine in recent matches.
“It’s a very logical signing,” said the Chelsea legend. “Chelsea were playing with a false nine and they needed a number nine and he is just that – he’s a goalscorer. It’s what they need and it’s what Higuain needs, so it suits everybody involved.”
The 37-year-old former Blues favourite also believes Higuain’s vast experience as an elite performer in Europe’s top leagues will allow him to wear the dreaded No9 shirt of Chelsea.
“One thing is for sure, you have to be the finished article to wear the Chelsea number nine shirt because it’s heavy,” added Cole. “And he has played for some big clubs, so it shouldn’t be a problem. It will just be how quickly he settles in, but the great thing is Sarri knows him, knows what he’s about as a person and he knows the system. So it ticks boxes.”
