Michy Batshuayi has enjoyed some good vital game time during his time on loan at Dortmund, scoring seven Bundesliga goals in the process. However, his domestic season has been cut short with a suspected broken ankle that he suffered in the Ruhr derby against Schalke, where his loan side lost 2-0.
The worst thing about such a serious injury at this stage of the campaign is that it makes the 24-year-old a huge doubt ahead of the World Cup, which is less than two months away. The Belgian was stretchered off after a coming together with Benjamin Stambouli and was shortly after seen leaving the Veltins-Arena on crutches. If he was to miss his country’s trip to Russia, it would be a huge disappointment, especially because of the added hard work he has had to put in during his short spell in Germany.
Batshuayi is expected to return to Chelsea for the remainder of the season in hope that the medical team at Stamford Bridge can get him back to fitness as soon as possible. There were some reports directly after the match that suggested it was a possible broken leg, which would’ve ruled him out of the World Cup. While a broken ankle won’t be much better, it would give the slightest glimmer of hope that he could return just in time.
Romelu Lukaku and Dries Mertens will be ahead of the Chelsea striker in the pecking order for Roberto Martinez’ side but his impact could still be huge for his country. Blues fans will be desperate to see their man back in action on the world’s biggest stage but it is certainly touch and go at the moment.
It could be a disappointing summer for Michy Batshuayi but let’s hope that he is still up for selection for Belgium as they look to challenge for their first ever World Cup triumph
