Catalan giants Barcelona could be set to make a sensational move for rising Chelsea star Andreas Christensen, according to recent media reports.
The 21-year-old defender, who returned to Stamford Bridge following a two-year loan spell at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer, has impressed with his performances so far this term, displacing veteran defender David Luiz from a starting berth in the Blues’ first team.
The young Danish star, who already has 14 national caps to his name, currently has two years remaining on his Chelsea contract, but that hasn’t stopped the Blaugrana from monitoring his progress, reports The Daily Mirror.
Barca, who currently lead the La Liga title race by nine points over their nearest rivals, may be keen on making a move for Christensen before he is able to sign a contract extension at the Bridge, as they continue their search for a world-class defender.
After impressing as a youth at his goalkeeper father’s former side Brondby, Christensen was signed on a free transfer as one of Andre Villas-Boas’ final acts as Chelsea manager in 2012, before going on to sign a professional contract ahead of the 2013-14 season after impressing with his academy performances.
Following his recall from Germany this past summer, Christensen has responded well to being blooded in Chelsea’s first team, due to a combination of injury and lack of strength in depth, and is now considered one of the club’s leading prospects.
